Is “Running Fit 501” a training program suited for beginners?
Yes. You need to be able to run 3 miles without stopping or 6 miles with some breaks. You are advised to run a half marathon before attempting the distance of the marathon, but this is not mandatory.

“Running Fit 501” is a great program designed to help runners "have fun" while they train. It is a great way to keep motivated and learn new things about running. “RF501” is all about the "journey" that you take to your 'destination'.

What is a "destination event"?
A destination event is the race that you have chosen to train for in the RF501 season. Some runners enter the “RF501” program with more than one destination in mind. As long as you are completing your destination events during “RF501” season, you will receive schedules and support to get you to all your destinations.

What type of paces do the runners run?
There is a wide variety of paces, from under 7:00 pace to over 13:00 pace. You will choose a "training zone" suited for your ability. Coaches will help you  decide what training zone is best suited for you.

Do you offer a walk/run schedule?
No. The training schedules provided are individualized, but there are no walking breaks incorporated in the schedules. You may elect to add walking breaks in your training runs, but there is no special training technique or guide to help you with a walk/run process, but coaches can help you decide if and when you should take walking breaks.

How many times a week does the group run together?
We offer a group long run on Saturdays mornings at all the locations. We also offer a midweek evening work out at all locations, (the night varies at each location - check with the head coach. A member may work out at any location or at all locations if they desire. It is not mandatory that you be present at all the work outs or group long runs.

What if I can't come to all the group runs or midweek workouts?
As “RF501” grew, more and more benefits were added to the program. Twice/week group runs is another way to offer a runner more time to train with “501” coaches. But not all runners can take advantage of this benefit and so a lot of runners only run once/week with the group. You can still get great training during the season even if you cannot attend all the workouts.

Another way to take advantage of the midweek benefit is to run at another location on a different day, i.e. if you are in the Chelsea program and you can't run on Thursday night, then you can go to Ann Arbor and run with the group on Tuesday night.

Information regarding periodic seminars and running clinics is posted on the "member" calendar, so if you can't attend a clinic or seminar that you are interested in, you can alert your Head Coach so he/she may make arrangements for you to receive the information from the clinic or seminar.

Are the group runs in nearby parks or in the neighborhoods of each store location?
It varies according to location, weather, the time of year, and the distances. Generally the Head Coaches will try and design courses that are either in a park, on bike paths, or on streets that are surfaced with asphalt. If a coach does create a course on city streets there will not be any vehicular-traffic-control on the course and it is the runner’s responsibility to observe all city, town, and township traffic laws.

How many 20 milers are there each season?
This varies, there is at least one 20 miler/season, but generally Head Coaches set up (2) to (4) 20 milers because not all the runners are training for the same marathon.

What kind of support would I receive if I am training for a half or full marathon that no one else in the program is training for?
The same kind of support that all the runners get in the program. Every runner trains at the same time and same day, you may not run as many miles as another runner or you may run more, the course remain open until the last runner is done.

How do I find out if anyone else in the program is running the same half or full marathon that I am?
You will get a list of all the destinations of all the current season's RF501 member's destinations.

Before the program starts, how many miles/week should I be running and how long should my longest run be?
For marathon training, ideally you should be up to 30 miles/week for at least one month. You should be ready to run 8 to 10 miles for your long run.

For half marathoners, it is recommended that your weekly mileage be at least 25 miles/week and that you can run at least 6 miles for a long run.

Keep in mind that not all training programs make these suggestions, but here at "RF501" we like to introduce you to reality. It is difficult enough to run a marathon and the lower your weekly mileage, the more difficult the marathon will be.
